Sleep Apnea, part 87
Ok, now for the meat of this blog: the sleep doctor. I went in this am, disheveled & bleary eyed, as I always am in the morning. Before the diagnosis, I just assumed that everyone spent their mornings this way. I let the nurse know that I was gaining weight, not losing like they told me. The ramp part is unbearable because it feels like I can’t breathe. (For those not in the sleep apnea loop, a ramp is the first 10 minutes that a breathing machine is on at night. It kind of acclimates your throat to having air pumped into it. They start it at a lower rate than what gets pumped into you at night. You choose your own ramp, 10, 20, or 45 minutes. Mine is on 10 minutes & sometimes I leave the mask off during the ramp, because it feels like I can’t breathe.) This is causing some anxiety as you can tell by my blog earlier this week. Also I feel like I have no energy to do anything.
So the doctor comes in & says that when I was on the Autopap machine I stopped breathing about once an hour, as opposed to the 6-11 times per hour I stopped breathing before the sleep machine.
He asked me if he could put me on the Autopap & I said yes, please. The CPAP has a water reservoir, so your nose & throat don’t dry out, but dude. I’ve felt like I was drowning a few times. So I got the machine I wanted.
Then I reminded him gently that he thought I had a sleepy brain when he first saw me, and he said, yes. I think that’s what you have; I’m not going to make you do a nap study, let’s just take care of the problem now.
I was so happy I almost did a cartwheel!!!
So I begin my new meds tomorrow. If they counteract with the TOLVAPTAN & I die tomorrow, please know that I loved you all, I want my kidneys donated to the PKD Foundation for research, and K-Lo gets everything in my Nasty Drawer. The pooch gets the insurance money.
