signs of spring

Monday, February 4th, 2008

Not only are my daffys poking through, they have buds—I swear this happened in a day…..and I’ve been seeing robins which are a bit scarce here in winter.  It was 71 here today and supposed to be warmer the next 2 days—should go out and do some yard work.

The week-end was uneventful.  Saturday, A. attended her university lecture series on world events and I killed time at McD’s again drinking decaf coffee.  Sunday we saw Gracie (the horse) again….totally different mood for Miss Gracie this week—walk, trot, even canter–no problem.  She did manage to step on the very ends of my toes when we were getting the bridle on her.  They are red and a bit tender but no bruising which is weird cause I take ASA every day I remember. Food for the week-end was unremarkable; no big no-nos.

Gym today:  tm for only 1.3 mi.–will make this up, didn’t want to overdo with the sore toes, 15 min rowing, ladies lite aerobics

Food today:  bfsk: grapenuts cereal w/skim, V8, Tea w/skim……early lunch:  homemade vegtable soup, f.f. cottage cheese, last slice of banana bread…………….later–Panera: chicken noodle soup, Greek salad, baked chips       hmmmm…no fruit again and that is strange, I like fruit and I have plenty in stock, will have some kind of fruit yet before bed.

G’nite, chickadees!

I’m glad it’s Friday.  I’ve had good energy all week but today isn’t in the ball park; maybe I didn’t rest well, who knows?

Ruby asked if A played soccer before.  In PE and informally a lot, formally, the short answer is yes, twice–once as an 9yr. old with the Y team; the second time (almost) last year as a freshman and therein lies a story which partially explains my ambivalence to her wanting to play now.  Last year she was in an academy at a different city high school—overall, a much more affluent school.  It was very much “clicky” and she was of course “out of zone”.  This year she switched to the city high which houses the IB program–a great IB school but center city and in a much poorer (and rougher) high school overall.  Soccer is played as a spring sport, it’s the conditioning that’s going on now.  Last year I paid $90.00 to have her attend the conditioning weeks.  She then joined try-outs a few days late and figured she was ok to play as at least j.v., nothing was ever said to her by the coach about anyone needing to be cut.  On Wed. they were given uniforms and I attended the parents meeting (maybe 6 families there) that evening, stayed after to meet the coach (a female student at a local college, who graduated from this high)—by that time the room was just about empty.  On Thursday the team picture for the yearbook was taken (no practice).  On Friday A. went to practice and the coach told her she was cut.  When I asked her what the reason was A said she said she “just wasn’t good enough”—-SORRY, I smell a rat here—this is NOT how these things should be handled at ALL.  A runs 10Ks; she was voted most athletic for her entire class the year before—didn’t make any sense to me—not so much that she was cut, but how it was handled.  I screamed bloody murder (nicely) all the way to the principal, who was called while away for the week-end and the upshot was they they fell on their sword, apologies all over:  new coach, handled wrong, didn’t know any better.  Well, it was ruined for her by then.  So, soccer does NOT sit well for a few of reasons, but mainly because I’m an unforgiving bi*ch when it comes to something that’s been so unfair as this.  But A is one of those try and try again types, whereas I hold and nurse that grudge forever and wish very bad things on the people who hurt my daughter.  I really do think the best sports are the ones where you depend on yourself and your own performance.  Enough!!!  What will be, will be.  Oh, as for softball, I suggested that to her and got nowhere.

Gym: 2.3 mi tm, ladies lite aerobics.

Food:  bfsk: V8, oatmeal w/skim, tea w/skim………..snack: 2 slices deli turkey, f.f. cottage cheese, thin slice banana bread, 1/2 packet Instant Breakfast powder in about 6 oz. skim……..will add later…………late lunch–realized that was a rather large snack!!  tomato soup, chicken, peach yogurt w/walnuts……….just had “dinner”–not much hungry though: last of the bean salad, strawberries……

Ahhhhhh….another exciting night with a book and tv.  G’nite chickadees!
