Florida—I love you!!!

Just had about 6 of the juiciest, sweetest, dripping with flavor strawberries from Florida.  Ours won’t be ripe till early May; thank-you Florida!!!  It’s only the last few years that I discovered a passion for fresh fruit.  Growing up mom occ. bought bananas, we picked wild huckleberries, and had grapes in the yard but everything else was pretty much canned fruit, in that heavy syurp, no less.  If she bought fresh strawberries, they were mashed up with tons of sugar added and served with shortcake.  Now THAT should be a crime!!!!

I’ve been thinking about goals since I don’t seem to have any except for a specific weight I want to get to.  I would like to aim for a loss of 2lbs./month; that seems sane and should be doable even with my un-cooperative (w/o massive exercise) body.  How to do this…..well, eating properly is a given and honestly, I think I pretty much know how to do that…..the other aspect is good old exercise, w/o going overboard (no more 5K/day!!!!)  so I’ll aim for my 3 usual weekly gym work-outs and 2 mi. on the t-mill on Tu. and Th.

OK, on to food and exercise:

Mon.    bfsk: oatmeal w/ skim, peaches (canned but rinsed well),  decaf tea w/skim……….lunch: 1/2 can tomato soup made w/skim, 1/2 roast beef sandwich w/mustard, veg. mix–carrots, broccoli, cauliflower,  1/2 vanilla yogurt w/ fresh sweet dark cherries………snacks: few almonds, 6 Cella chocolate covered cherries (BAD!!!), but sooooo good!

Exercise:   usual gym and ladies lite aerobics w/ a little over 2 mi on the t-mil

Tues……….bfsk: oatmeal w/skim, decaf. tea w/skim…………….snack:  1/2 Wasa, f.f. cottage cheese w/peaches………….lunch: 1/2 can chicken w/wild rice soup, added a lot of spinach, 1/2 roast beef sand. w/ mustard, 1/2 vanilla yogurt w/ blueberries…………..dinner (on the run): 2 Kashi garlic/thyme crackers, 1 chicken nugget, 2 waffle fries, almonds………..snack: microwaved lo fat cheese chips w/salsa

Exercise: 2.25 mi. on t-mill

Wed……bfsk: V8, oatmeal w/skim, decaf. tea……………….early lunch: 1/2 roast beef sandwich w/mustard, f.f. cottage cheese w/peaches……………dinner: 1 piece pizza–garlic, mushroom, spinach, salad-mixed greens w/olives and tomatoes……………….snack: couple handfuls of peanuts, strawberries, may make some cheese chips and salsa yet.

Exercise: usual gym w/ ladies aerobics……not quite 2 mi. on t-mill (1.82 mi.)

Later, chickadees!!!!

Oh how I love strawberries fresh. I remember picking fresh strawberries. Nothing is quite as amazing or delicious as fresh picked, juicy fruits. :)

And 2 lbs a month seems completely do-able. So, good luck with it!!!

Your childhood relationship with fruit sounds like some of my inlaws and their kids. They sprinkle tons of sugar on fruits…it’s so sad. 2 lbs a month is totally doable. Send me some of those yummy berries!

Wow I’m pretty surprised that you found such nice strawberries! I’m hecka jealous! ;) But so pleased you enjoyed them so much! Small pleasures in life!

The goal is totally wonderful! I love it. I wish I could learn a thing or two from you! :)

Sugar on fruit should be illegal!!
I am wild over cherries myself, and blueberries. My grandmother and I used to pick fresh blueberries and then buy fresh cream from our neighbor for them. It was so thick it had to be scooped out with a spoon and so sweet on the berries. I don’t think I have ever had anything so good since.
I grow fresh banana, mango, lemon and avocado in my yard. I also grow papaya but give them away cause I am allergic to them. My friend grows clementine oranges, star fruit, lychee and grapefruit so we trade back and forth. I could live on fresh fruit :)

My mom often sprinkles sugar on berries to “bring out their natural sugars.” Although sometimes they can be sour, it still defeats the purpose! I am on phase one of South Beach and can’t eat fruit yet, and oddly enough, though I never have before, I am craving it and can’t wait to eat it!!!

Sorry for the reminder of the brownies!! Don’t be like me and go fix them now (read my blog). I am so mad at myself!!!
Be strong and do NOT give in!!!

I too am jealous of the good strawberries!

I am glad to see someone else with smallish goals - I’m going for 1-2 pounds a month too, and even though it’s slow, if I can lose at that rate and eat like a normal person, and not kill myself w exercise, it’s a HUGE VICTORY for me.

Good luck - I’ll be watching how you’re doing, and cheering you on!

The strawberries sound very good. :) I am so pleased for you.

I think I would sound weird but we hardly ever get canned fruit here. I mean I guess we can get them, no one till our financial strata ever think of having them. :)

I still don’t like fruit. But have developed quite a taste for pineapple since I had them for my cold like you said. And love a few other fruits now. In here, the trick is to get really good fruits instead of the artificially ripened or genetically modified cheap crap.

Some of the fruits we get are almost always good like guava, some berries and other less popular stuff. I don’t think I have ever had bad litchies but they are exported so much (which is good) we hardly see them. Grapes and bananas are mostly good and sometimes bad. What is bad without failure is apples - almost always. I love small crunchy apples but hate the big ones.

Anyways that’s enough info on my liking of fruits. Actually while writing this I realized I do like quite a few fruits - take pomegranate and also papaya if eaten irregularly. I like mangoes sometimes too but that is another thing we Indians are like supposed to be mandatorily crazy about and we get many which are not that great. A very few are awesome though. :)

2 lbs a month sounds good. I am sure you can do it. It is more than what I can do now though. But getting it all together slowly.

Lots and lots and lots and did I say lots? of love,

    iniya
