another manic Monday

Monday, November 19th, 2007

The week- end went well; by that I mean I made it to everywhere I was supposed to be.  Food was a challenge but I didn’t blow it totally, just partially.  No, I haven’t been on the scale again yet—afraid it’s gonna recind my 2 1/2 lb. loss.

Sat. food: bfsk: oatmeal, banana, decaf tea w/ skim…….lunch: Max & Erma’s: French onion soup, 1 pc. fish (picked some of the breading off), 1 chocolate chip cookie…………..dinner: 2 slices deli thin sliced turkey, bean salad, peanuts

Sat. activities/exercise:  volunteered at AAU state cross country championships–there from 7:30am til 1:30pm; on feet, mostly moving; of course going to Max & Erma’s later to celebrate probably blew off all the moving benefit

Sun.: bfsk.: V8, oatmeal, decaf tea w/skim………..lunch: spag. , bean salad…………..snack: 1piece of biscotti w/ decaf coffee……….. dinner: 2 pieces pizza………..snack: leftover sweet potato custard from filling pies, 2 prunes

Sun. activities/exercise: mainly walking about putting hanging notices on door knobs in neighborhood affected by the club’s Turkey day race, took A. to her study group, library, went to see the Lipazanner (probably spelled wrong!) Stallions perform in the evening—btw: they were wonderful!!!!

Today, so far–bfsk: V8, oatmeal w/ skim, decaf tea w/skim, snack: f.f. cottage cheese, 1/2 multigrain Wasa w/p.b., blueberries

exercise:gym–treadmill–2.92 miles w/ slight incline, ladies aerobics

See ya later, chickadees!

end of the week

Friday, November 16th, 2007

Friday evening–isn’t it funny how different days of the week evoke different memories?  When I was little–not real little, cause we didn’t have a t.v. until I was about in 4th grade–it was the one night I could stay up and watch t.v.; Alfred Hitchcock and The Twilight Zone, if I remember correctly.  I’d be ready for bed in my quilted robe, with my cat smuggled up from the cellar and hidden under the robe to keep me company and a fresh box of Bachman pretzels to eat.  Fast forward a few years and it was roller skating night, a few more years brought Friday night dances at the local Catholic H.S.  I’m not Catholic, went with a girlfriend who was and ended up going to their prom rather than my own.  He was my first “steady” (yeah, I probably talked to him once a week!) and I couldn’t expect him to pay for both schools and since he asked me to his first I missed my own.  I went in a borrowed gown–it was green.  We double-dated with another couple who were hot and heavy into each other; my date drove and I was rather embarrassed by the back seat goings on.  Everyone in the world was more mature than me at that point.  I remember they were planning their wedding and naming their kids—for the record, they didn’t ever get married.  After  the prom we ate, then we went bowling!!!!

Enough!  Onward!  Gym today: stretch and exercise mat, weight machines–I’m back up to my weights from last spring on most, a little above on others ( 140lbs. on calf lift, 95lbs. on compound row), treadmill for 2.92 miles, rowing machine for 8 min..   I know some people just hate-hate-hate treadmills but I really like them.  No heat, cold, rain, wind, traffic, or smog.  No dogs, bees, mosquitos, snakes, or other critters. I can set/vary the speed and incline at my whim.  I know exactly how far I’ve gone in how much time.  It feeds my need for info.  Time to think and plan.  What’s not to like?  Yoga was cancelled so I went on to the grocery store.

Food: bfsk: oatmeal w/skim, 1/2 banana, decaf tea w/skim…….snack: 1/2 Wasa w/p.b., v8………….main meal: hamburger patty, sauteed mushrooms, black eyed peas, asparagus, mixed greens salad w/ tomatoes and balsamic vinegarette, mango chunks………..snack: 1/2 wasa w/ ham and low fat Swiss, blueberry yogurt w/ extra berries

I’m done, chickadees—promised to make bean salad yet tonight.  Have a major race to work tomorrow—must watch eating there.  Sweet dreams!!!

heading to bed

Thursday, November 15th, 2007

I’m done in; not from anything special today, just needing some z’ssss. Wanted to get my food written up before tomorrow.  Oh, I keep forgetting—-I’ve gotten some cod liver oil to try; I just can’t swallow those huge horse capsules of fish oil.  It’s orange flavored so the taste isn’t bad—but the texture is strange and the after taste is not great.  Will keep trying to get used to it.  Right now my way is to just get it over with FAST!!!  In addition I also take a multivit. and extra calcium and an aspirin every day—-and yes, I chew it all.

Bfsk: oatmeal w/ skim, tea w/ skim…………….snack: V8, 1/2 multigrain Wasa w/ham and lo cal Swiss, mango chunks…………..sm. meal:.4 cherry tomatoes, 1 meatball, 1/3 of yogurt w/ extra blueberries, 2 peperocini, 1oz. unsalted dry roasted peanuts…………….dinner: 1/2 Subway sub (spicy Italian)

Exercise: I actually made it out to the garage and did a fairly strenuous 15 min. on the exercise bike.

G’nite chickadees!

good scale!

Thursday, November 15th, 2007

I stepped on it today with much fear; would my recent 2lbs. down disappear, would I weigh even more????  The scale goddess was smiling; another 1/2 lb. off.  I’m OK now, I’ve had my fix; with that confirmation I can believe the 2 from yesterday.  I have been being very good with food and exercising my little heart out, the scale goddess should reward me.  Ha!!!  As I’m typing that “reward” sentence my mind is flashing: CHOCOLATE—I am truly pitiful!!!  When will I learn????  AND:  Isn’t it funny how the scale went from a monster to a goddess?

Food for the rest of yesterday.  Lunch: V8, clam chowder, mixed lettuce salad w/ tomatoes, mandarin oranges…………..dinner: 1/2 shaved steak sub w/ lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and hot peppers

Food today.  Bfsk: oatmeal w/skim, V8, Decaf tea w/skim……snack: f.f. cottage cheese, 1/2 wasa……………lunch: 2 meatballs (Ruby Jeans recipe!!!–GREAT!!), cauliflower, 1/2 sweet potato, mixed greens salad w/ tomatoes and cucumbers………….dinner: V8, 1/2 Wasa w/ 1/2 slice Swiss cheese, clam chowder (last of that batch), 2/3 of a blueberry yogurt w/ 1/2 cup extra blueberries added (my grocery had blueberries– 2 containers for $4.oo, thought that was pretty good).  Snack tonight was 1/2 wasa and 3 prunes.

A. got her cross country sports letter tonight for making districts.  We were there most of the evening while they went through every fall sport.  Both the volleyball and field hockey did super this year.  The boys coaches bought a cake for the kids and invited the girls to share. What a difference.  At her last school we had full catered dinners at these things; it was a much more affulent student body.  But this school is ranked in the top 200 high schools in the country—aaarrrggghh—listen to me—everything goes back to food!!!

I give up, one more cup of tea and I’m going to bed; sweet dreams, chickadees!

the beat goes on

Tuesday, November 13th, 2007

Anyway, I never did get to the bike last night–ended up doing keyboard so A could work on a awful high (F, I think) violin scale….and no, I don’t play other than a few scales she’s taught me for her own violin practices.  All the keyboard keys are labeled with tape so I know what to hit.  Playing music is NOT one of my talents.  Neither is singing, for that matter.  But I do love listening to almost anything.

She’s pretty miserable, but I sent her to school full of pineapple and drugs with instructions to drink and drink.  We’ll see if she makes it all day including the orchestra practice afterward.

I felt bad about not having my usual gym day yesterday; it opened late cause of the holiday and all I did was ladies lite aerobics and a little here at home.  So, I went in at 6:30 and did extra today– stretch and warm-up, weight machines, and 2.8 mi. on the treadmill with slight incline.  I stepped on the scale today and I’m down 2lb. since I first got weighed this go round–3 more to get off by the end of the month.  I’m not sure that 2 down in 5 days is accurate; we all know what capricious monsters the hateful scales are and I haven’t been THAT good, but I’ll take it.

Food so far: bfsk: 1 pkt. oatmeal w/skim, V8, decaf tea………….snack: 2 pieces thin sliced deli turkey, f.f. cottage cheese, 3 prunes………

Off to read the paper and clean bathrooms—exciting day, I tell ya, chickadees!

fall gone?

Monday, November 12th, 2007

Ok we are warm again, gonna be that way all week.

Never got back yesterday, so here’s the rest….main meal: about 3 oz. strip steak, mixed lettuce salad w/cucumbers & tomatoes, lima beans, 1/2 large apple………..snack 2 thin slices turkey, 1/3 peach yogurt w/few walnuts, 3 peperoncini, 1/2 wasa

More exercise: 35 bicep curls each side w/10 lb wts.

On to today.  Bfsk: 1pkt. plain oatmeal w/ skim, banana, V8, decaf tea…………..lunch: ladies exercise group lunch @ Mongolian Bar-B-Q: ate as healthy as I could–hot and sour soup, stirfry of onions, mushrooms, broccoli, garlic, very few noodles, tomatoes, and chicken, also 2 small crunchy sesame bread sticks…………..dinner-ended up grabbing something while out,had to wait for A.’s script. to be filled and it was getting late-Chinese buffet (it was cheap and convenient); once again, picked as good as I could.

Exercise today was ladies group–40min., going out to the bike for 20 min. when I get off here.

I finally gave up on the home treatment of that sinus/ allergy thing A. has and took her in after I picked her up today at 3:30; as I suspected, it has now advanced to a sinus infection.  Started her on Zithromax, continuing Advil cold and sinus pills too.

Well, off to the bike, chickadees!

hateful scale

I finally got on it yesterday; this blog is now unofficially renamed “just 17 more”UGH!!!  It’s depressing, if I lose 5 by the end of Nov. and I’m still 12 from the always evasive goal; but whatcha gonna do—gain 10 more in protest???—it’s fixed, I tell ya.  OK I’m still on board for the 5 by the end of Nov. movement.

Yesterday we went to Lexington to a horse show–that’s a 4 to 5 hr. drive each way sharing the road with a huge bunch of Hokies heading to Blacksburg for the game……and I think some of them were celebrating a mite early.  We didn’t have their company on the way back; I think we were a bit in front of them.  Of course, THEN we had to contend with deer all over the interstate.

Anyway, food for yesterday was as follows: 1 pkt. oatmeal w/skim, V8, decaf tea w/skim………………snack (in car): 2/3 peach yogurt, 6 walnut haves, 1/2 piece string cheese……………lunch: Wendy’s–a single w/lettuce and tomato, sm. chili…………snack: almonds and a couple prunes…………dinner: Chik-Fil-A–sm. chicken noodle soup, 2 waffle fries……

Yesterday had almost no exercise with all the sitting; my pedometer registered only about 3,000 steps by the time I went to bed which is awful.

Today (Sun.) bfsk: 1 pkt. oatmeal w/ skim, V8, rinsed canned mandrin oranges, decaf tea w/skim…………..snack: f.f. cottage cheese, 1/2 multigrain wasa w/ peanut butter, 2 prunes…….

I’ve done 40 wall push-aways, 25 chair dips, 5 push-ups, and 25 sit-ups……………..will edit later to add rest of food and any more exercise

I had the strangest dream just before I got up this morning; I was driving through an intersection that I drive through frequently, my daughter was in the car w/ me, and partway through it the steering wheel came off in my hands.  I was going slowly and threw the car in reverse and s-l-o-w-l-y backed in a curve till I hit another car with three VERY tall people in it 1 man and 2 women……the man was calling someone (police, tripple A, insurance????) when I woke up.  How strange….and it was super real, one of those dreams that stays with you—the mood from it , anyway.  Am I going to lose control of my life? or some aspect of it?—it’s just a myth that we have any real control anyway; it can all change in the blink of an eye.

Strange, chickadees, strange….

Gonna do this!!!!

OK, FIVE:  count ‘em…. 12345, yes 5 by the end of this month!!!

Late to gym; had to drive A to school.  I’m afraid we may be heading to the dr. for sinus inf. when I pick her up at 5 after ensemble practice…we’ll see.  I did a quick stretch warm up and 2 miles on the treadmill then yoga, which was very crowded today.

Food: 1 pkt. reg. oatmeal w/skim, decaf tea, then decaf coffee, both w/skim…………..snack: Lo salt V8, a tiny bit leftover noodles just tossed w/olive oil and garlic and parsley, and a 1″ bit of chocolate brownie (these were hanging on my front door last night–my neighbor’s husb. made them and she was sick of looking at them)……main meal: 1/2 sand. of ham and Swiss on whole wheat, mixed lettuce & tomato salad w/ balsamic dsg. and 1 bowl clam chowder……….

I’ll try to get in some time on the bike tonight and get back to record the rest of my food later since we are REALLY serious now!!!

Bye for now, chickadees!!

Update:  snacks for day: 1/2 banana, few peanuts……….lite dinner: 1/3 can tomato soup, 1/2 Wasa w/ 1/2 slice light Swiss cheese

Didn’t get to bike but used 10 lb. free weights a bit tonight in front of tv.

For Shelby

and all the other good dogs out there.  After the dog food scare I looked into making homemade food for Betsy the B. but never got that ambitious; her brand wasn’t affected anyway.  But I did try a couple different treats and this one proved the winner.  The garlic is supposed to keep fleas away, too.

                 Garlic Parmesan Cookie

2c. flour (white or wheat-I use half each), 1/3c. oil (I use canola), 1/3c. Parmesan cheese, 1t. garlic powder, 1 egg, 1/3c. powdered milk, enough water for a stiff dough—-get your hands in there and mix.  Roll out thinly-I put between 2 sheets of tin foil in about 3 batches and use rolling pin.  Cut in cute shapes or not—I don’t bother anymore.  Put in a 350 oven  for 15-20min.  Turn oven off, can leave in oven up to 8 hrs.  Break in pieces, store tightly covered. Freeze in zip bags.   I make it up about every 3 weeks.  As you can see, it’s also safe for humans, not my fav. though.

Ok……. bfsk: 1 pkt. reg. oatmeal w/ skim, V8 juice, decaf. tea w/skim……………. snack: 2 slices thin deli ham, 2 rye crackers, 1 slice low fat Swiss……….lunch:homemade clam chowder-2 bowls,   1/2 banana…………….dinner: Panera: 1/2 Greek salad,  low fat chicken noodle soup

I keep thinking it’s later than it actually is with this time change.   A. is currently snoring in the Lazy Boy. She had a headache again today; I think she’s going through the season change/ turning the heat on thing that I did last week or else she’s got another sinus infection.  I put a warm damp cloth on her face and covered w/ a heating pad on low—humidity, as some of you suggested, may just help.  Will try to talk her into neti later but it’s a hard sell; in usual 15 y.o. fashion she tells everyone for days that I tried to drown her.  Been there, done that; not sure I want to revisit that whole scene.

Later, chickadees!

Wed. noonish

Wednesday, November 7th, 2007

Been to the gym and ladies exercise; stretch mat, weight machines, 2.4mi. on treadmill.  Bfsk. was grapenuts flakes, tea, skim…….snack: deli turkey, f.f.cottatge cheese, 3 pepperocini, 2 prunes—big snack (to say nothing of rather odd), I know but it had been 5hrs. since I ate; got held up forever at the grocery store.  Will have late lunch; planning on making homemade clam chowder as it’s downright chilly out there today.   Must bring in my tomato plants again.  There was actually frost on the car windows this am, I hate it, that’s the first this yr.  I really had a hard time crawling out from bed and that heated mattress pad today; it was sooooo comfy.

I watched Oprah the other day—Dr. Oz, I like him.  He did this drink in a blender that I’m gonna try to make.  I think I got all the ingred.  Oprah said it tasted refreshing, so we’ll see.  I can’t believe I actually bought fresh parsley; that’s something I should be growing.  Gonna buy some cod liver oil too; I just can’t swallow those huge pills.

See you later, chickadees…
