Dieting is easier at home
Exercise, Food June 1st, 2008My healthy diet is getting easier for me. I have had a really good week - focused, veggie-filled, not feeling deprived.
Going away for this weekend wasn’t so easy. First there was the lunch my DH prepared just before we left. Very sweet of him to whip up an omelette for us all, but it was loaded with butter… We also didn’t have enough water with us for our hike, and although I made decent choices at dinner, I was over-hungry and couldn’t resist the bread (nor the chocolate buttons before dinner).
The good news is I did walk (well, very light hiking) both Saturday and Sunday. It felt good to move my body and fabulous to breath fresh country air. Every time we go hiking (which isn’t often) I’m reminded how much I like it, and it’s something both my husband and I would like to do more often.
Breakfast this morning was tough - huge basket of bread and pastries, no fruit in sight… I had bread w jam (lower cal choice than the pastry) and a plain yogurt. Skipped the sweetened applesauce (which is not very healthy) and had a ton of coffee. I purposefully went light on breakfast, but paid for it later when I was starving after our hike and very grouchy… Of course I didn’t make the best choices then either, because the one thing you can usually find open in France on a Sunday afternoon is a bakery, so bread it was…
Still, to focus on the positive I made generally healthy choices, I got in some exercise, and at all times I stayed in control of my eating and ate what I considered the “less bad” of my choices. Sometimes that was 8 chocolate drops instead of the whole pack, sometimes 4 slices of bread instead of buying a slice of quiche or a chocolate croissant, but at all times I did manage to make the choices. And that, my friends, is real progress.
I’ll repeat again my mantra (in hopes of convincing myself of it someday) :
PROGRESS, Not Perfection
Glad to be home again — especially because next weekend we’re away again — and it will be EVEN HARDER!

Very excellent, my dear Round! Progress, indeed. Fresh baked bread has always been a particular downfall of mine - love sweets (damnit) but it’s the bread, potatoes and pasta that REALLY seduce me. But you’re right, you know - it’s those little better choices that eventually translate into a real change in your habits. I think the more gradual they are, the better, too, because it becomes less of a struggle and more of a natural evolution in eating. You GO, girl!

You’re so right, Ellabella! Last night, I had a mini-binge. Caught myself but DH doesn’t understand why I’m so upset about it. He says I deserved a break and I shouldn’t let it bother me. I told him it’s not so much what I ate but that it was unplanned. We make choices. Had I chosen to take a night off dieting I would have been okay with it. It’s when I don’t plan to do it that I get upset with myself.
You made good choices considering the circumstances, Round. Congratulations on holding the line! Have you thought about anything you can do to help prepare for next weekend?

Great job! You’re right - the crash and burn extreme aspects of food management are only temporary - while the lasting, reasonable (emphasis on REALISTIC) small changes are what makes things permanent and goal fulfilling.
A new month full of new challenges.
I’m going to incorporate some CARDIO into my new month as a weight loss aid. Yoga is fine, but it’s not really doing anything for fat burning right now. Hiking and cardio will help me along with reading blogs like yours to remind me of the big differences that subtle changes can make!
Be well…

Great job on your dieting. Remember that dieting isn’t always easy and at times it can feel overwhelming and difficult. Always remember that sometimes you are going to slip up. It’s ok to slip up every once in a while. Don’t get discouraged if you do slip up. Keep the slip ups minimal. (how many times did I say slip ups)
Always know that you have to have to have plans when it comes to dieting. Say you are going somewhere where there are a lot of people and snack will be served. Just eat before you go and drink plenty of water to keep your stomach full.
Anyways, I am not going to ramble on and take up more space on you blog. If you want check out my article on dieting motivation:
