Completing a Project
General February 21st, 2008I spent yesterday finishing a major work project that has been hanging over my head since November. It was not an interesting project nor was it of particular importance, but it required a lot of time and had to get done and I’d put it off to the last possible minute because I considered it unpleasant.
It turned out to not be nearly as bad as I’d feared - not as much work, not as complicated, not as time-consuming. Just starting out in the morning was really hard for me, but once I got going I was able to accomplish one step, then another, then a break, another, etc all day long. I didn’t finish until 8:30pm but considering I expected to spend 2 full days on it that was okay.
It occurred to me later when I was cooking to relax at the end of the day (wow, can we say progress- I used to NEVER cook!) that this stupid work project was a pretty good analogy to starting to again lose weight.
I’ve built up losing weight into this huge gigantic project in my head. Maybe I just need to start and not worry about putting together a project plan.

Funny how projects we dread doing are often not nearly as bad as we imagined.
We now all need to get back on track.

I think that’s probably the key. And, it’s true for me as well. Do each day as it comes. Be responsible - but also realistic. We shouldn’t force ourselves into some pigeon hole, or time frame. Just keep on going.

I can identify with the secruity of having a project plan in place before starting a major task (like weight loss). But, planning and worrying about starting can be major impediments to accomplishing. Congrats to you on finishing up your work project. Your experience is a lesson to us all that things don’t get done all at once, but step by step by step.

Good for you. I know how that feels about having a project to do that you’re not all that keen on - then you finally do it and it’s not so bad. Good analogy to weight control efforts. Way to go on the cooking!
