Menus for the week
Planning January 28th, 2008I never plan menus, but I’d like to try. I like the idea of having a general idea of what we’re going to eat to help avoid the call to the pizza or sushi delivery guy. I also like the idea of double-checking that I’ve got the key ingredients for something I want to make, as often when that’s not the case I give up on making dinner that evening. My DH is good at improvising. I am not. But I don’t want rigidity. I don’t want to know on Sunday what I’m going to be eating at 12:41 on Friday. My life is scheduled enough, thank you very much, I want room to be spontaneous and flexible. But thinking though what I can make for a week - i.e. menu planning - doesn’t necessarily mean assigning everything a firm date, so I’m going to give it a try.
I figured this week is a good one to take a first step, as my DH leaves for a work trip on Wednesday, so for most of the time I’ll be single, therefore able to plan meals to 100% my tastes. Since I don’t feel the need for meat at every meal, and I don’t mind eating leftovers, that makes things much easier than in our life together.
I was so happy to get to the market today - having been away for the weekend we were pretty low on all things fresh, but now I’m stocked up. I have celery root, cabbage, carrots, jerusalem artichokes, onions, beets, spaghetti squash, zucchini, apples, pears, grapes, oranges and clementines. And eggs, yogurt, cheese and a roast beef that will be dinner on Monday (and some leftovers too).
Here are some of what I can make :
- Jerusalem artichoke soup (I’ve never actually cooked them, but I have a few recipes. Maybe I’ll do something other than soup…)
- Cabbage (probably plain steamed, I love it that way, and no one to complain about the smell)
- French onion soup
- Spaghetti squash with tomato sauce
- Leftover lentil soup (in fridge - must eat this in first half of the week)
- Celery root puree (this is a typical French dish - I’ve never made it, but I’ve eaten it several times & liked it. One of my coworkers explained how to make it.)
- Maybe a good stir-fry. Been ages since I’ve had one… I could use carrots, onion, some of the cabbage, zucchini… Mmmm
- I think I’ll make some applesauce - we have a lot of old wrinkly apples.
- Oatmeal. I’ve been eating muesli for weeks, I’d like to add oatmeal back into the rotation…
What a good exercise. I see now that I can’t possibly eat all that in a few days, especially as I’m only home for breakfast and dinner. I guess I’ll put off the onion soup and the spaghetti squash, as both will keep for a while.
Desserts will be fruit or yogurt.
I’m new to this menu thing, am I missing anything?

Your menu sounds lovely! Celeriac is a pretty awesome vegeteble, very underrated here

Ahh! Where did you buy your spaghetti squash, please? I’m desperate to eat some again, but we had them for about 6 weeks in October-November, and that was all. I have no idea about what places might sell them, and I haven’t seen any at my local market…

Menu planning…….good job, started this about a month ago and our calls for take out have dropped. Used to call for take out 2x a week but for the month of January just two calls. It truely helps to have it planned out a little. I also feel so accomplished and good that I have fed my family healthy homecooked meals however I do HATE to cook.

I understand the menu planning thing. I’ll keep things on hand for a couple different meals, but I don’t plan them out. But it does get frustrating when I think of something I’d really like to make & don’t have everything I need on hand. For instance, I’d really like to make one of my “throw together” soups, right now, but I don’t have everything on hand that I have in mind. And it’s only a couple of things I need (tomatoes & spinach, mostly), which makes running to the store seem almost pointless!

I’ve been meaning to try menu planning but I’m so bad about sticking to planned stuff! I’ll be following your posts about this with interest.

Oooh. You could also halve and roast (or saute)your jerusalem artichokes; make a vinaigrette with olive oil, whatever tasty vinegar you have, and some clementine (or orange) peel. Just a thought!

Menu planning is not for everyone but it looks like you have a great idea of what to do. Good luck - I hope it works out for you

Good luck! Im sure you can do it.

I like to have a plan for five or six different meals during the week, not necessarily for specific nights, but I just make sure I have the components for them on hand. Then I can choose what I feel like eating when the time comes.

My husband works a few nights a week, so what I’ve been doing lately is planning 3 meals a week. I make sure I have the stuff for those and make enough that we can eat left-overs. I hate hate hate! being the one in charge of planning what my family eats. I have the Eating for Life cookbook. My husband and daughter have picked out things they like from that and I go from there. It’s helped a lot!

I hate menu planning. Just because I hate having to think ahead. But, it certainly helps! I used to live 20 minutes (without weather) away from the closest food source, and I was really good about planning then! Now that we’re in town, I’ve gotten lazy. I’m dying to eat over at your house though! It always sounds so wonderful and European!

Please send some of that delicious food over this way, it is desperately needed :)Sounds like a lovely menu.

Uh… well, honestly, I think you have it pretty well covered! You are definitely more creative about food than I am. My eyes bulged reading all that you were listing for ideas. I would never think of that. I can only think of places to go, not things to make. How do you do it?!

Nice job. Good thinking on your part to have such a good variety of things… your food won’t be boring!

Sounds like a good mix. With my insane freezing/stocking up I really don’t do much planning. I usually decide the night before what we’re going to have, then work around it. I think we only have one set meal during the week (Friday - hamburgers on the barbecue).

Your menu looks great. What time is dinner being served?

Your menu looks delicious! I love the idea of planning a menu. I do that; but only mentally. When I go to the grocery for the week I think of what I can make with the things I’m buying before they go bad. I’ll buy peppers to make a Taco Bake with; but those leftovers can also help to make chicken stir fry. It’s a wonderful idea. You’re a lot less likely to call for pizza if you know you have the ingredients to make something healthy and delicious at home (as opposed to not having the ingredients and being hungry and in the mood for pizza! Oh no!). Good luck, I’m looking forward to hearing how this menu planning affected your eating habits this week.
