Walking to Bilbao - second stop : Le Mans, France
Exercise January 24th, 2008Back in November I decided to start counting my exercise time towards a goal. I am currently walking for exercise I chose to measure in miles. Since I’m very interested in the Basque country, and we have a weekend planned there in February, I chose Bilbao Spain as my destination. So I’m walking to Bilbao.
Bilbao is 462 miles from Paris (my home). Some of you suggested I makes some stops along the way, which I found to be a big improvement to my original plan.
Sometime over the weekend, with all the walking around we did in Amsterdam, I passed over the threshold for my next stop. My current mileage is at 132, but I’ve selected my second stop to be Le Mans, France, which is 114 miles from home in Paris. Walking around a new city for 2 days will really rack up the miles!

I chose Le Mans as my next stop because I’ve actually been there, unlike most of the other cities approximately 110 miles from Paris. It’s on the outer reaches of the Loire Valley.
I had a friend who got married here a few years back, so I got to wander around the town and church for a few hours that day. The old town center was really charming, with old buildings where the wood beam construction, ‘colombage’ is showing.

Le Mans is most famous for the 24 hour car race held here every year. Car racing doesn’t interest me in the least, but my friends actually got married the same day as the race in 2005, and we needed to book train tickets far in advance to be able to come.
What about the food? The city is famous for it’s Rillettes. Rillettes is a kind of pork spread that is made with seasoned pork cooked in a whole lot of lard (pork fat) and then chilled. They usually spread it on bread. At the wedding there were huge bowls of it, and everyone said it was fabulous. Here at home our local butcher won the national rillettes competition a few years ago, and we often buy it as an appetizer when we have guests over. The concept of it grosses me out completely — as you look at rillettes you see the white lard among strings of pork and it makes me squeamish to even see it, let alone smell or taste it. Yeah, that white stuff is lard.

Despite the creativity in using “all of the pig but the oink” which the French love to do, Le Mans is really a nice city.
I also found that there is a type of apple from Le Mans, called “Reinette du Mans”. I must admit that I’ve never seen these apples sold in the market near my house, and from what I read online (in French) they don’t seem worth going out of my way for them, but it’s nice to know there’s a local food I’d like much better than Rillettes!

Le Mans sounds lovely! I went to the Loire on a family holiday when I was 10, but have very hazy memories of it. Lots of pretty castles and vineyards, i think.
132 miles is a pretty long way, well done! What is the next stop going to be?

Beautiful pictures. The pig grosses me out as well!

My husband grew up partially in France; have to see if he knows any of these places you’re writing about.

Wow. Never heard of rillettes before. Being from the southern US, I’ve seen pig ears, feet, chitlins, fatback, etc., but rillettes is a new one. I’d have taken a pass, too! LeMans and those apples look wonderful, though.

Yeah, I think I’d go with the apples, too. Double uck.

How fabulous to be able to get in some exercise while exploring such a wonderful place. You have a wonderful attitude - you will be successful.

Those streets remind me of England… especially the old hill towns. It was nice to reminisce about that after seeing those pictures of the cobbled street and buildings! I wouldn’t like Rillettes, I don’t think. My grandpa was French, so it’s cool to see what France looks like when I have never been there. Are you living in Paris as an ex-pat? Your life is so cool!

So beautiful - I’m looking forward to talking this virtual walk with you
Oh, I recently stumbled across a recipe for a lighter version of rillettes (it uses olive oil instead of pork fat & salmon instead of pork). I’m sure purists would shudder, but it *is* really tasty!
It’s from David Lebovitz: http://www.davidlebovitz.com/archives/2007/11/salmon_rillette.html

The rillettes just sounds (and looks) gross! I’m with you and would rather have the apple. Thanks for sharing your walking tour with us.

Thats a great way to exercise - a real true plan. The pics are great. Good luck! and much success.

That’s a good idea to count your exercise time towards a goal! ^_^ I imagine it must keep your thoughts rather on the place to which you’re walking, rather than simply the next step. France seems lovely, though I’ve never been. But this summer I’m going to travel by train all around Europe, so we’ll probably stop by somewhere, though we’re not sure where yet - any suggestions? (I would love to go to Paris, but my friends have all already been there, so I’ll save that for another time).
And as an answer to your comment on my blog, I think I have to think in white and black terms, or atleast try it for a while. The thing is that I used to give myself a treat or two before when I tried to lose weight, but every time I did so I ended up eating way more than I should’ve - which equals no weight loss. So, I’m going to eat perfectly healthy for maybe a month, as sort of a detox - maybe after that I can start treating myself with the occasional cupcake or something, and actually make it occasional. And I am a perfectionist, something that I like you am working on 24/7. (:

That’s fantastic… the walking I mean. There are so many places I would love to go. I’ve barely been anywhere. Maybe I should take a walk like you… maybe I’ll run. Um… I’ve always been proud of my ability to try anything once… but that stuff… I think I would have to pass.

I love the idea of a virtual walk. Hmm….where would I like to go? I’ve never been to France, but lived in Italy for a while so maybe I’ll start there and get to see some of the places I didn’t get to.

I did something similar in 2005, except that it was for the Eowyn challenge (same thing, only you have to pick a destination from the Lord of the Rings world). It was funnier and more interesting to be able to tell myself “ah, now I’m near place X”, than just count steps on my pedometer.
I should do something like this again. I wonder if there’s some kind of device I could attach to my bike to actually measure how many kilometers I go every day?
And someday, I will really attempt some crazy stuff like walking from Strasbourg to Colmar in one day. There MUST still be small roads on which one can safely walk, far from the highway.

I’m sorry but the Rillettes…. nasty. Can’t do it. Nope.
I wish I had somewhere interesting to virtually walk to. I’d probably have to walk a pretty good distance to get somewhere interesting. I mean, San Francisco, etc would be reasonable, but since I grew up in that area, well, not so exciting. Great work on the walking, and I love the little tour you’ve given us all. I absolutely love French and would love to be able to visit France. Reading your blog is like a little mini visit!

Your journey is truly inspiring (both the travel aspect as well as the low stress weight loss). Thanks for posting it’s a pleausre to read you…:)
Much success to you.

You lead such an interesting life. I wish I could travel all over Europe. You must love your life. My goodness, envy is swelling to an unhealthy level over here in the states! But I love the idea of “walking to Bilbao” as a way to measure your exercise. Keep it up, I’m sure you’ll do wonderful!

I’m an adventurous eater and pre diet I probably would have given it at try. Now a days the idea makes me shudder because of all the calories I could be spending eating healthier things lol. I’ve never been to France but it looks lovely. You know, I think I’ll make a world map and put gold stars on every place I want to visit LOL!
