Today’s Totals - July 16th, 2008

Well, I did attempt the HIIT in the pool later in the afternoon. I could only last about 10 mins as I felt my arms were going to drop off. :) When I looked at the stats I only got my HR up to 154 with an average of 139. So I was right, I just can’t push it as much as I can on the treadmill. Oh well, it was a thought.

So I can already feel the sore muscles so tomorrow is going to be a doozy. I’m going to try and do the cardio early in the morning before it gets too hot. So I’ll do a pre-workout shake and some fruit and then have a late breakfast after I’m done. The afternoon brings a trip to the vets - never a low stress thing, so that should be fun.

So just my meals to plan for tomorrow and then I’m off to bed!

Food for the day:

Total: 2415 (25% fat, 30% carbs, 39% protein)

Breakfast: egg/egg white omelet with cheese, apricots (402)
AM Snack: protein shake with frozen sour cherries (265)
Lunch: whole wheat tortillas, mustard, smoked turkey, cheese, peach, plums, peas (pod type, shelled) (528)
PM Snack: raspberries, boysenberries, pisco sour, flat bread crisps with cheese ball, protein shake (425)
Dinner: pork souvlaki, snow peas, butter, salad w/dressing (496)
Late Snack: cherries, protein shake (298)

Strength Training - July 16th, 2008

I warmed up with a 15-min walk around the pool, tried chasing the cats in (gave up). Then I did:

A: Wide-grip Deadlift from Box
- 70t/8, 70t/8, 75t/8
Added: Overhead Shrug - 75t/8
B1: Bulgarian Split Squat - 22t/8, 22t/8, 25t/8
B2: Underhand-grip Lat Pulldown (Pullover) - 30e/8, 30e/8, 32e/8
C1: Reverse Lunge from Box with Forward Reach - 12e/8, 12e/8, 15e/8
C2: Dumbbell Prone Cuban Snatch - 10e/8, 10e/8, 12.5e/8
D1: Swiss Ball Crunch (Long-arm) - 8, 8, 8
D2: Reverse Crunch - 8, 8, 8
D3: Lateral Flexion (Hannah side 3) - 8, 8, 8
E: Prone Cobra - 120sec, 120sec, 120sec

And then, no, no HIIT. I was getting close to 90 mins so I just did a light walk with some stretching. I was going to see if I could manage to work up to intervals, but it just wasn’t going to happen. My legs were still quite sore this morning and I was outside from the D exercises onward.

HRM: 563cals, Max: 157 (88%), Avg: 126 (71%)

So I’m sure some of you know this but cats do not make good workout partners! I’ve been doing my warm-ups outside (weather permitting) and recently they seem to want outside all of the time. They’re house cats though so we never put them out without someone around. I’ve also rigged up a door for them in the dining room (as the little one freaks out if the door is shut). It’s just a piece of an old sheet taped to the sliding door frame in three places but it allows them to wander in and out without letting in a ton of flies. Silly indoor cats have to come inside to pee.

They’re usually pretty good to get inside but last night the little one (Shadow) did not want to come in. We were eating out on the patio and it was starting to get late, and frankly I was tired after all the canning. It took two of us chasing him a lot to get him in. This is unusual since he’s the better one of the two about coming in. Unfortunately we found out that he’s pretty freakin’ fast when he chooses to be. So this morning I wasn’t going to let them in but my mother convinced me that she’d help. No, not coming in so I left her reading a book on the patio while I came in and did the A/B/C exercises. Then I took the swiss ball and a mat outside to do the rest of them.

This is where the bad workout partners came in. During the first sets they were really just watching from a distance. While I was doing the second set of swiss ball crunches they both decided that the mat I’d brought out would be a good place to watch from. They got progressively bolder and while doing reverse crunches Gus would crawl under my legs. During the prone cobras at the end I had Gus crawl on top of my back (and he’s a big cat), and Shadow tried to take off with the watch from the HR monitor. (I always take it off for these so I can keep track of the time.)

It wasn’t too bad, almost pleasant in the shade. Although I see now that it’s 32F out (89.8F). I had to do the swiss ball crunches in the sun since the only shade was beside the pool. Although my balance is better I decided not to risk falling off the ball into the pool. I know, sounds like fun, but not fully dressed and with the solar blanket on the pool.

So I’m not sure if the heat was why I couldn’t push out the intervals, or the length of workout preceding it. I’m also wondering if I was just slower moving today because I was still sore from Monday’s workout. I think the next time I do the B workout I’ll stick to a 5-min warm-up and see how it goes. I will try the HIIT in the pool this afternoon but I know I won’t get my heart rate up that high doing it. Overall though a pretty good workout.
