Today’s Totals - July 15th, 2008

This was definitely not a rest day, but I accomplished a lot between today and yesterday. Last night I pushed through and finished up the canning just after midnight. I set the alarm for 9am and after breakfast I started canning up the sour cherries. I got 13 quart jars from the 30-lb pail. Since this (in my own warped mind) left me with too many sweet cherries I made a decision…

Yes, I got back in the car after lunch and went for more cherries. Since I was there I bought frozen apricots (for jam, I prefer them to using dried). Oh yes, and a stop at the fruit stand again for a quart basket of the white cherries. The very nice woman (who we usually buy a huge amount of fruit from) had to make up a quart for us and I’m pretty sure we got way more than a quart. This year we won’t be heading there once a week to load up on fruit. For no other reason than the current gas prices.

So I ended up with 26 pints of sweet cherries and 26 quarts of sour. Oh, and I found out they sell clingstone peach slices starting sometime in August so I suspect I might be back. :o

However, I’m tired and very sore. I suspect that yesterday’s workout kicked my ass a fair bit. Some of the other aches though are canning related, but that’s okay. I will probably push through tomorrow’s workout no matter what since I may have to drop Friday’s workout depending on how the garden tidy-up / house cleaning / party prep stuff goes tomorrow and Thursday. I also have to make a trip to the vets on Thurs (shot time) and that’s always stressful. I’ve had the carrying cages out for a couple of weeks (so they aren’t completely freaked) but so far it’s never gone well. If they don’t go at the same time it’s a pretty good bet that Gus will try and kill Shadow. Yep, it’s happened before.

So now I think I need to get some sleep… and maybe a heating pad. :)

Okay, Anne, drop the cherries and back away slowly with your hands where I can see them! :-)

You are definitely the Queen of the Cherry Bowl!

I know, scary isn’t it? I put the canned stuff away this morning and it pretty much fills one section of shelf in the crawl space. And they’re really quite high calories. (20/oz for the sweet, 16/oz for the sour)

I dropped my bread from breakfast this morning as we have apricots, peaches, plums, two kind of cherries, and a few clementine oranges in the house. Oh, and two kinds of apples (but some are going to end up as sauce). We’re both really bad about buying fruit. My mother has said she won’t buy any more at the market on Friday, but you never know.
