Words can’t begin to describe how happy I am
April 30th, 2008
I’ve been to the doctor several times over the last few months because of what I thought was athlete’s foot. Why did I think I had athlete’s foot? Because my doctor looked at it and that’s what she told me. No question, she was certain that’s what was wrong and she prescribed an antifungal. It didn’t work, and neither did the next medicine we tried. She told me there may not be anything I can do until after the baby is born, and just about discouraged me from seeing a dermatologist. She said that a dermatologist wouldn’t be able to do anything more for me than she could.
After a few more weeks (now over 2 months in total), my feet just continued to get worse. I was upset, embarassed, and beginning to get depressed. So I said hell with it and called a dermatologist. My appointment was on Monday, and guess what?
He took one look at my feet and told me immediately that the problem wasn’t fungal. He said he believes that I have dyshidrotic eczema. I’m so happy I want to throw a party. Eczema sucks, but at least I have hope that it will get better with the right medicine. And now I don’t have to do ridiculous amounts of laundry in super hot water and bleach, and sterilize every surface in my house constantly because of fungal paranoia :-) It’s only been 2 days and my feet look better already.
And my attitude has changed completely. I’ve gone from completely preoccupied and upset to completely happy. It feels so good not to be worried about my feet anymore.
I can’t wait for them to heal completely. I’m gonna go out and buy SEVERAL new pairs of sandals. I have a good excuse.

Trying to stay positive
April 23rd, 2008
So to recap my lovely situation, i’m 15 weeks pregnant and I have a terrible case of athlete’s foot that is pretty much ruining my life right now. I’m in pain, I can’t exercise, and my feet look terrible. I’ve tried 2 types of medicine. Neither worked, and the fact that I’m pregnant severely limits the types of medicine I can take.
The fact that I’m pregnant also means that I’m extremely emotional. I woke up this morning, got into the shower, and immediately began to bawl my eyes out. I calmed myself down and then started crying again while drying my feet off. I just feel completely disgusting. It’s pretty funny the things we take for granted. They’re just feet, for christ’s sake, but I would give anything right now for them to be healthy and normal and smooth and pretty like they were a few months ago. I’m wearing flip-flops today, but I have to wear long pants so that you can’t see the big patches of red, raw skin.
Every day is a blast. I wear flip-flops in the shower, dry off my feet with a separate towel, then dry them with a hair dryer, apply medicine that doesn’t even work, and then put socks on immediatly so that I can walk around the house without infecting every surface that I step on. You should try it. Ha ha
You know you’re desperate when you’ll try anything. Okay, almost anything. My husband went to the natural foods store in our town, and one of their suggested athlete’s foot remedies was to wrap chopped garlic in gauze and place it in your shoes. Can you say NO FUCKING WAY will i do that? Can you imagine what people at work would say? “Oh look, here comes ol’ garlic toes.” I just can’t do that. I did, however, soak my feet in apple cider vinegar last night. So painful. But it dried the hell out of the affected areas. Who knows, maybe a miracle will happen and it will work.
I must be married to one of the sweetest men in the world. He saw how upset I was this morning, so he drove to work at lunchtime to bring me flowers. I have a wonderful husband and a baby on the way. I want this to be one of the happiest times of my life. It’s a shame that something so stupid is affecting me so much.
Day 243
April 23rd, 2008
Breakfast - Rice Krispies with banana
Snack - Double fiber english muffin with peanut butter
Lunch - Chicken, cheddar, lettuce and tomato on multi grain bread
Snack - Vanilla/chocolate twist soft-serve ice cream with gummy bears (I’ve been obsessed with gummy bears lately - must be a pregnancy thing)
Dinner - Muenster cheese, sprouts, tomato, cucumbers, mayo and honey mustard on double fiber wheat bread. Yum.
I feel like I ate pretty well today. I just need to keep an eye on my gummy bear issue. I don’t want it to turn into an addicion ![]()
I’ve lost track of what day it is…..
April 21st, 2008
I’ve been missing in action for 2 weeks and decided to make at least one more post while I ponder whether or not to delete my blog entirely. It served me well for several months, but hasn’t been working for me as of late. No, I’m not blaming the blog. It’s a blog, and I can only get out of it what I put into it. I’m blaming myself, but also accepting the fact that some changes happened which are affecting my diet and exercise.
First of all, I’m 15 weeks pregnant. I’ve started slacking on my diet and giving into cravings way too much. I need to find a better balance again.
Second, I developed athlete’s foot a few months ago. I must have caught it from the shower at the gym, and the thought of that alone makes me want to puke. My doctor gave me a cream to use and said it could take from 6-8 weeks to work. I gave it 7 weeks for christ’s sake, and it didn’t work. I went back and got another medicine 2 weeks ago, and it doesn’t seem to be working either. My feet are extremely itchy (to the point that I wake up from a dead sleep) and they crack too so it’s painful to walk sometimes. Can someone tell me how I’m supposed to get any fucking exercise?
Oh sure, there are medicines that would clear up the athlete’s foot immediately, but they aren’t safe for use during pregnancy, or during breastfeeding for that matter. I can’t deal with this pain and torture until October when the baby is born, nevermind several months after due to breastfeeding. I wouldn’t wish this on my worst enemy. I’m starting to get depressed about it, and I cry about it all the time. I’m so embarassed about the way my feet look. By now I would typically be wearing flip-flops every day, but instead I’m stuck in sneakers and socks. And I live at the beach during the summer….I don’t know what I’m going to do.
I called this morning to make an appointment with a different doctor. Maybe he’ll be able to help. Wish me luck.

which brings me to my next point. i haven’t really been working out much at all. last week i only went to the gym twice. i’m eating well for the most part (i said for the most part, please ignore this past weekend. please.) and i haven’t gained weight. i’m taking my vitamins and getting lots of sleep…… i just have no desire or motivation to work out right now. this is terrible. i need to continue to take good care of myself and not just for my own sake, for the baby’s sake too.
