I’m probably the last person on earth you would call a “healthy eater”. I have no inhibitions- I eat whatever I want, whenever I want it. The thing that’s truly different from 2 months ago, when I could sit down and eat a tub of ice cream in one afternoon, is that I don’t feel guilty about any of it anymore, and I’ve learned to make better choices, cut down to a weight-loss calorie level, and to keep track and be responsible for my food actions.
I started off eating 1250-1500 calories, but with the advice of my nutritionist, I am not eating usually 1500-1600 cals a day, with certain days (about 1 or 2 a week) on which I eat anywhere from 1300-1900 (I find this stops my metabolism from stalling and getting used to eating a certain number of cals).
Here’s some example days from my diet journal:
Example: Last Monday
Calories, Food
180 Oatmeal
100 Chicken w/parmesan cheese
113 Mashed Potatoes
135 Glazed Carrots
200 Light Ice Cream sandwich (Slim a Bear)
220 Pretzels
300 Campbell’s Chunky Soup
330 More pretzels
Total: 1578.
Another example: Saturday
360 Pasta w/vodka sauce
100 Light Ice Cream Sandwich
140 Goldfish crackers
700 Applebees Southwest Chicken Salad
64 Beer(MGD 64)
220 pretzels
Total: 1584
Now, I take meticulous notes, and closely weigh and measure everything I eat. I’m sure you look at these menus and think, that’s not very healthy, but for me, its all about making better choices and keeping what goes in lower than what gets burned. Better choices- for example, the pretzels on my menu would have once been a whole can of pringles, the ice cream (Klondike’s light version, called “Slim A Bear”), replace big bowlfuls (or straight out of the tub), the Applebee’s southwest salad replaces a burger and fries, or something equally high-calorie on nights when I go out with my boyfriend, and the beer (Miller 64) replaces a higher calorie beer or drink.
And so far, so good! I hope that I will continue to evolve as I spend more time on my diet. I rarely have problems with desire to overeat anymore! And I’ve lost 34 pounds so far (two months on the diet)!
