Riddle me this…

If I make my own bread is it healthier than the bread I can buy from the store? The recipes I’m looking at have almost twice as many calories as store-bought bread per slice, but on the other hand you aren’t getting the high fructose corn syrup and other stuff that goes into store bought bread.

Hmmmm…. this whole economy thing has me thinking and I think it’s time I start flexing my cooking wings and making some of these things myself. I have to admit I am a decent cook (I just don’t like the mess that comes with cooking) but bread baking seems to elude me. It may be the humidity here, but it NEVER turns out.

I think it’s time to start trying again. I don’t eat alot of sandwhiches anyway (GROSS) but my husband and son do and I can go through almost 2 store-bought loves a week.

Anyone have any tips for me?

I have contemplated the whole bread baking thing before. I read some about artisan breads and all that. I messed around with some sour doughs. Before I started dieting, I was on a big home made pretzel kick. But they are not whole wheat, so I don’t make them anymore. But mainly, I think I am just more of a cook than a baker. For me, there is so much trial and error with bread and so many of my attempts have come out way too dense.

We go through a lot of bread here. What I get is not the best tasting, but it is cheap. I pay $1.57 for a loaf of store brand whole wheat bread from WalMart. I also buy whole wheat tortillas for wraps. Not sure how those compare on price though.

I love making bread…but then I love a nice slice of hot homemade bread dripping with butter like nothing else in the world, so it’s so bad for me to do it.

I used to bake bread, Eryn, but gave it up due to the mess and time constraints. That was a long time ago. Now, there are so many natural, healthy breads out there, I’m not sure it’s worth it. It’s awful but the only breads I bake now are super dooper BAD breads (like zucchini, beer bread, and sour dough that I can heap butter on). Knowing how I am, I’m better just avoiding it entirely! :-)

I’ve only made bread in a bread making machine before, from a box mix. If you hit upon anything fabulous, let us know and share the recipe!

I have to say, I’ve always had a thing about fresh bread. A crust of warm, fresh bread with the butter all melty and honey on it. mmmmmmmm. Think I remember reading that description from “A Tale of Two Cities” when I was in primary school and it’s stuck with me. Breadmakers are totally out of fashion here at the moment in appliance stores, but I love ours. We’ve had it for 10 years now. Had to get the non-slip coating re-done, but it’s right as rain now. Trouble is, it makes such BIG slices. I really must get honest with myself and cut them in half.

How did your haircut go? I liked styles number 2 and 3 best.
