Just another 3fatchicks.com weblog

A friend - or acquaintance, really, but someone I like quite a bit and manage to touch base with two or three times a year - recently sent me a link to a YouTube video called “Eve of Destruction” and set to the song of the same name from the late 60’s. Lots of footage of the war in Iraq and other current day horrors, and whoa (!) quotes from the Book of Revelation in the Bible. Ironically (I thought) - it pointed out that this song, written during the Viet Nam war was JUST AS RELEVANT today.

Well, sure. and undoubtedly, had there been videotaping capabilities back then, it would’ve been EQUALLY RELEVANT during the crusades, and throughout history for all time!

Perhaps the world has ALWAYS been on the “eve of destruction” for somebody, eh? Humanity has, since the days of the cave men, been fighting against some rival tribe, some rival group or country or groups of countries…people have died horribly and inflicted horrible death on others repeatedly and regularly. So why NOW, would such a song be any more relevant than it might have been a thousand years ago?

So, getting back to my “glass half full/glass half empty” theory, should we see what’s happening now as part of the process of draining away all of our hopes for peaceful coexistence in an insane world, or should we view our capacity to survive all of this craziness as a sign that we will eventually win the cosmic lottery and humanity will eventually evolve into something better?

Hey, I only ASK the questions, here. Somebody else has to find the answers.

Philosophical meanderings aside, I had a really lovely day yesterday. DH & I drove down to Newport as planned, and lo & behold: they were having yacht races and a “Kites over New England” festival at Benton Point. I packed us a low cal/high fiber lunch, we brought water, Arizona diet iced green tea, and lots of cherries & green seedless grapes to munch on. We walked around the historic downtown area for a while (HIGHLY recommended: everything, and I mean EVERYTHING is on sale!) and then drove out to the point, set our chairs up on the rocky outcroppings and watched the tide come in while browning up nicely, observing all the different kites in the air, and keeping track of the yachts as they made their way across to the finish line. Headed for home at @ 6:00. It was a gorgeous day, made even “gorgeouser” by virtue of the fact that the day before (Saturday) when I weighed myself, I had dropped a pound despite my overindulgences when DS was here to visit. I STILL will not wear a bathing suit (Wore shorts and a tank top yesterday) but the progress, no matter how slow, is encouraging. Being past the halfway mark, with just 21 pounds left to lose feels WAY better than three months or so ago when I had 44 pounds to lose!

Back at work this morning, not a bad agenda for the week, sunny days, good for bike rides after work. Life is okay at the moment. :-)

Thanks, Soclose. Yep, WBZ is the Boston station you most likely heard it on. Now they’re all news and talk. I listen to them for the traffic reports coming into work in the AM, and they’re almost always wrong. Tsk!!!
