My first 10k!

cardioqueen on Jul 16th 2008 09:25 am

I haven’t weighed myself in ages. I also haven’t worked out in ages. Crap. But one thing that I wanted to announce is:

I’M TRAINING FOR MY FIRST 10k.

I’m so stoked to say the least. I know it’s going to be a lot of hard work but I can do it. Plus… training like this keeps me from wanting to eat the crappy foods and from wanting to smoke cigarettes. There are a couple events in the area.

    Cranberry Crawl 5k/10k

That’s what? About 12 weeks from now for the October race . That is MORE than enough time. My greatest hurdle will be this suffocating heat. I cannot run of treadmills to save my life. So it’ll be early morning or late evening runs from here on out if I plan to go outdoors. Anybody else training for any marathons?

Breakfast: Oatmeal, orange juice
Lunch: Salad w/ Italian dressing
Meal 3:  2 slices whole wheat bread, about 8 small meatballs

Down, down, down

cardioqueen on Jul 11th 2008 11:18 am

I notice that after lunch I don’t really keep up with my food log.  I need to watch that.  I stepped on the scale today and to my delight it read: 158.6!  Finally moving in the right direction.

Coffee Riot

cardioqueen on Jul 10th 2008 07:25 am

I woke up this morning still a little stiff so I put on some meditation music and did a few sun salutations to help loosen me up. I really miss yoga class and wish I could find an affordable one around here. Back home they have this class that operates solely on donations, hence why they call it “donation yoga”. I wish they offered something similar here. I’m nearly out of soy milk, and I’m completely out of water so I need to do a little shopping soon.

So I put my waffles in the microwave because I’ve still yet to purchase a toaster oven, put a filter in my coffee maker and went over to the freezer to grab my coffee. I opened the canister and poured a scoop into the filter, shut the hatch and realized…….I still don’t have any water! Dang it. So I throw on a jacket, grab my wallet and walk out the door. There’s a Wal-greens really close so I was just going to quickly pick up some H2o. Well it didn’t even occur to me that perhaps Wal-greens isn’t even open this early (6:30AM). Dang it. I get to the front door and realize the kind employees are still tucked away in their beds this morning. Crap. So I’m out of coffee, and out of luck. Looks like I’ll have to pick up a cup on the way.

Breakfast: 2 waffles with sugar-free syrup, coffee w/ soy milk & splenda Gas station coffee :( w/ 3 creamers & splenda

It hurts in a good way

cardioqueen on Jul 9th 2008 08:29 am

My back feels so tight this morning, but in a good way. I think a few sun salutations should probably help loosen me up. That’s why I love Turbo Jam. It’s a great workout. Maybe I’ll do it again today if I don’t feel like running. It’s been so hot outside and my apartment complex does have a fitness room, but who wants to run in place when it’s so beautiful outside right now? I’ve got another busy day ahead of me. Class, exercise, and probably girlfriends calling me up to hang out.

Speaking of which—I gotta learn how to balance my friends and my exercise/diet. One thing I’ve learned about college students is that they love to eat. Most of the people I’ve been hanging out with are pretty health-concious, but not always. When I go out with friends I often find myself ordering a margarita, or a quesadilla, or something equally as detrimental to my diet. I’d usually get salads but not every place even serves a salad. And like I said, I’m a college student (read: broke) and most of the cheap food is so unhealthy for you. So I need to learn some balances. I need to learn how to go out with friends, without crashing my diet. It’s possible, I know.

Breakfast
Total cereal w/ soy milk, coffee w/ soy milk & splenda
Lunch
6 buffalo wings (255 calories), Slice of honey wheat bread, serving of spinac
Snack
Rice crispy treat
Exercise
melting_bulb.jpgI don’t know what I was thinking running in the heat, but I’m pretty sure I almost melted. It felt good, but the heat was unbearable. I wasn’t timing my run, but I ran about 1.15 miles
Dinner
Boca burger on 2 slices honey whea w/ ketchup, red beans
Snack
Rice crispy (150 calories)

Summary:  Hmm… so looking back, I made a lot of good food choices.  I also made a lot of goofy choices too.  What grown person eats rice crispy treats still?  I can thank my mother for packing me up with them before I left to come back home.  Who am I kidding?  They were great!  Hopefully my scale budges.  I need to get more serious about running.  It’s just been so freakin’ hot!  I really want to get comfortable with 2 miles so I can eventually get back to my 3 milers.  I can do it.  I will do it :)

G’nite!

A new day

cardioqueen on Jul 8th 2008 08:52 am

runningshoes.gifLast night I slept like a log.

A log that’s been tumbling down the Missouri River during a thunderstorm. I’m up this morning, nonetheless, and ready to get out there and get my exercise out of the way. I’m going to try for my new 2.0 run this morning while it’s still cool out. Only thing I hate about outdoor running is all the cars…they’re a little distracting, but I’d much rather be running where there’s a lot of cars than somewhere completely isolated and secluded. Can’t win ‘em all, right?

Edited to add: So it started raining right as I was about to walk out my front door to get my morning run. I wasn’t feel like being drenched so instead of running I did 45 minutes of my “Turbo Jam” DVD. I’m just as sweaty and feel like I got a good workout in. Who knows, if it ever clears up I still will probably go for a run. I’m motivated today!

Breakfast
Total cereal w/ soy milk and Mixed fruit cocktail
Lunch
Hamburger patty w/ green bell peppers on 2 slices of honey wheat bread, peas, fruit
Snack
Rice crispy treat
Dinner
Boca patty, chicken quesadilla, strawberry margarita, tortilla chips & salsa, rice crispy treat
Snack
Small ice cream

Sooooo obviously my plan went way downhill after lunchtime.  I ended up scouring downtown with a buddy helping her take photographs.  It was a lot of fun and we ended up staying out for about 5 hours.  We did a TON of walking but not enough to burn off all that crap I ate for dinner.  I didn’t eat all that stuff together at the same time, but just wanted to stay accountable for what I’d been putting in my mouth.

Tomorrow is another busy day for me, but there’s not doubt about it–I’ve gotta find time to run.

Going on a little run

cardioqueen on Jul 7th 2008 04:49 pm

Breakfast: 2 waffles w/ sugar-free syrup, Coffee w/ soy milk & splenda
Snack: Nutrigrain Yogurt Bar (140 cal)
Lunch: Boca Chik’n burger on 2 slices of wheat bread w/ bbq sauce, Peas
Snack: 2 small rolls of Smarties and a dum dum (sweet tooth!)

Today I mapped a run that’s 1.0 miles each way for a total of 2 miles. Soon as it cools down I’m going for a little run.

Edited to add:

Yikes…so much for that great idea.  By the time I got out of my evening class and ate dinner, it was starting to get dark.  I scarffed down my food and then it all just sat there like a heavy little ball in my stomach.  So I waited for it to digest, all the while watching the sky grow darker and darker.  I’m not one for running alone at nightitme so I threw on my running shoes and headed out.  Well, it ended up getting way too dark out for me so I turned around.  I bet I only ran for maybe 10 minutes max.  I’ll try again tomorrow–I’ve got the whole day free!

So far so good

cardioqueen on Jul 5th 2008 11:11 pm

I thought I would check in to tell you how my holiday weekend has been so far.  So far, so good.  I did eat more than I should have yesterday, but considering it was a holiday I think I did pretty well.  I haven’t gone on a run since Thursday.  It feels so crappy!  I may head for a jog tomorrow when I get off work.

That settles it…

cardioqueen on Jul 4th 2008 09:00 am

I’m done.  I can’t do it.  Some people can, but not me.  I’m done jeopordizing my weightloss like this.  I’m done jeaopordizing my health.  I went out for drinks with the girls and we all know what happens.  We started chatting, 1 turned into 2.   2 turned into 3.  I got the good idea to pick up a cigarrette again (after about 10 days of not smoking!) and this morning I hate myself for it.

See… I used to smoke a pack-and-a-half a day.  I did that for a year.  Then I quit cold turkey for TWO YEARS STRAIGHT.  Stress got the best of me and I made the mistake of saying, “I just need one to take the edge off.”  Now it’s one when I go out with friends…which isn’t often, but still.  See, my friends all smoke and when I’ve been drinking I just don’t make the best decisions regarding my diet and health (hell, who does?).

But what a better day than independence day to take back my power.  I refuse to give it up to a margarita, my girlfriends, a cigarette, etc.  I’ve been doing really well with the exercise.  I’m not going to jeopordize my success.  So here’s my new plan:

  • For the next 14-days I am not going to drink any alcoholic beverage.  Period.
  • For the next 14-days I am not going out to eat with friends.  Period.
  • For the next 14-days I am not going to pick up a cigarette.
  • I will get rid of all of the lighters in my home.

It’s a start.  If I can take it one day at a time, who knows… maybe I can get back on track.  Smoking is a horrible habit and it’s not an excuse to say, “Oh, I’m young–I’ll quit later.”  My health matters now and I’m not going to do it anymore.  Like I said…I had like 5 cigarettes last night and although my body will probably hate me for it later, I’m going running.  Even if it’s just to punish myself :)  It’ll be good for me.

Breakfast: Banana

Foot massage?

cardioqueen on Jul 3rd 2008 08:35 am

My feet ache. I think I need some new running shoes. I have no arches and when I was younger it really hurt, but now it’s just become a pain in the butt in terms of finding good running shoes. I may end up having to spend more money than I’d like. Soon as I wake up a little bit I’m going to go for a morning jog. I wanted to get out there last night, but it started raining and thundering so I kindly tucked myself away under my sheets and relaxed in bed instead. It’s a new day, though.

I’m headed home to my parent’s house. I work weekends at one of the hospitals there, but thankfully I won’t have to commute much longer. If all goes as planned, I’ll be starting a new job here locally Monday morning! I can’t wait. I also can’t wait to get home and pick up my groceries!

Meal 1: Dry kellog’s
Activity: 1.6 mi in 15:30
Meal 2: Banana, Boca Chicken patty w/ 2 slices of whole wheat bread and ketchup, Coffee w/ soy milk and splenda, Dannon Fruit on the bottom Yogurt
Meal 3: Grapefruit (120 calories), 4 chicken wings (170 calories)
Meal 4: Raisin Bran w/ soy milk
“Meal” 5: 2 regular sized strawberry margarita  3 regular size margaritas, some chips ‘n dip….and about 5 cigarettes.  Disgusting.  I know.

Today is Margarita Night. My girlfriends and I get together twice a month for drinks and just to chat. I’m pretty concerned that I’m not getting enough food to eat. Hopefully next week things will get a little better. Yeah, I’m still eating like I live in a dorm room. I’ll get better once I’m able to stay home and not have to drive up and down the highways so much.
