I joined the gym
I joined the gym today and I think I’m going to like it there, but I realize that I hate using the stationary bikes. I started on the recumbent (sp)? bike, figuring my ample tush would be more comfy there. It was, but after about 15 minutes or so my feet started getting numb. I held out until minute 20 and then decided to switch to a traditional bike. My feet were better, but my nether regions became numb. So between the 2 bikes, I biked 10 miles in 40 minutes. I will keep doing it, b/c I have to, but as soon as the doc releases me I’m going to jump on the treadclimbers like there’s no tomorrow. I looked up the calories I burned and it said 460, so for 40 minutes of work I can live with that. If anyone has tips on how to avoid the numb feet let me know.
I went to the library after my workout to pick up some more dieting books and ran into some former students. One of them was the kid of the woman who wrote the letter to the editor about a movie I showed in class. I so wanted to say something about it, and I could tell he was really nervous talking to me, but I decided to be a grown up and let it go. All I would have said was “I really wish your mom would have talked to me about her concerns instead of writing to the newspaper” but I figured it was over and done with so I should let it go. Man, I hate being the adult.
Oh, I almost forgot. When you join the gym you get a free t-shirt and when she asked what size I automatically said 2X. She said, “Oh, honey, I think that would be way too big for you.” And she was right!! It felt great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Progress toward workout goal: 19/250
Jeeze girl, it makes me feel great reading about your shirt!!! Don’t ya just love when that happens, huh!
Feet oh feet! What to do? Mine get all tingly when I bike and I find it helps to keep my laces really sloppy loose. That’s all I got for ya! I’m still happy about your shirt!
Oh, my! You don’t need a big, old shirt, you need one of those teeny ones, skinny butt!
Does your gym have any water aerobics classes? That would probably work great for you! Sorry, for some reason I can’t stand a stationary bike and have never stayed on one long enough to get a numb butt or feet.
Oh, Yeah, I’m glad you let it go about the kiddo’s mom. Sometimes parents really embarrass kids and he was probably cringeing inside. My own mother did a few things when I was in school that made me just want to die! Smart move!
I had those same issues with a recumbent bike but after adjusting the seat back (it was set way too far forward) the only thing I feel is the burn in my thighs
.
Maybe try adjusting the seat around and see how it works for you? Your extended leg should just (flat foot) touch the pedal and you shouldn’t be pointing your toes at all while pedaling. I had to concentrate at first on keeping those feet flat but eventually it became second nature.
Well, I started my exercise with TransFirmation…because I’m a single mom and really don’t have time to go to gym. I still love it..It gives a real great workout to buns, I think.
Now I can do lunges and deeps with no problem, thanks to TransFirmation!
I’m glad that you like the gym…especially with your physical problem right now.
Don’t know about tingling feet, but on the “regular” bike, you can buy a gel bike seat cover at Target that fits right over the bike seat and makes it more like the cushy ones. I did this for spin class and it cost about $15, kind of a one-size-fits-all bike seat cover. Congratulations on joining the gym and woo hoo on the not giant shirt!
Another non-weight bearing exercise you might want to try is… stretching. I know, I know, I pooh-poohed it too when I first tried it, watching a 1/2 hour show on Fit TV. I tell ya, I was working hard ~ it was a GREAT work out.
I am currently looking for a CD about stretching now.
Yey you on the smaller T-shirt!
I get numb feet on the eliptical and I’ve found that, like m3@49, if I tie my shoes loose and wiggle my toes occasionally, it keeps ‘em happy. Maybe the “toe box” part of your shoes are too tight.
Yoga is an idea too…
stella got her groove back! the gym AND the library in one day? dang. you go girl!
yes, the rice krispie treats are addictive. luckily i finished them off yesterday.
we can do this!

That is great news - I always loved going to the gym sometimes made me feel like I didn’t want to leave
